i want to learn some martial arts and self defence techniques but i dont want to waste my money. I just want to try something new and be able to defend myself?|||www.learnkarate.com (great Wado Kai site)
www.youtube.com (tons of martial arts and self defence techinques)
http://www.judoinfo.com/video.htm (great instuctions in Judo with videos)|||In terms of web sites related to martial arts, I%26#039;d recommend the following:
No-Nonsense Self Defense - this website is more about the philosophy of modern martial arts and an examination of martial arts as a business. It%26#039;s got some excellent articles on what martial arts mean to different people, why people study it, and what they get out of it. It also covers the legal use of force and various modern interpretations of the psychology of fighting. Probably the most important thing you can learn from this site is what martial arts is NOT. On a practical level, there are some excellent articles there regarding how to choose a martial arts instructor.
Bullshido - this is primarily a Mixed-Martial Arts site that%26#039;s dedicated to debunking martial arts myths, exposing fradulent instructors, and that kind of thing.|||If you want to learn to just fight badly there are many video%26#039;s on google and you tube. If you want to learn to defend yourself correctly you cannot learn from books and videos. They are great referance sources for trained people, but to really learn the basics of any style you need to train under a qualified instructor at a good school.
There are so many small things that only an instructor can correct you on that can make all the differance on if something works or not. You also need to train with real opponents that know what they are doing and can offer resistance.
Anyone can imitate a motion, but if you do not do it correctly or understand what lies behind it, you are just doing the motion.|||WHEN Duke Huangong, the ruler of the state of Qi, was reading in the hall, a wheelwright was making a wooden carriage wheel outside the hall. The wheelwright put down his tool and came into the hall. %26quot;May I ask what book is Your Majesty reading?%26quot; he asked the Duke.
%26quot;I%26#039;m reading the books of the sages,%26quot; said Duke Huangong. %26quot;Are the sages still living?%26quot; the wheelwright asked again. %26quot;They died a long time ago,%26quot; the Duke said. %26quot;That means Your Majesty is reading the trash of the ancients,%26quot; said the wheelwright. Duke Huangong was very angry. He said, %26quot;How dare you, an artisan, come here and talk nonsense. Tell me what made you say so, and I may let you go. Otherwise, you%26#039;ll die for it.%26quot;
Unhurriedly, the wheelwright answered, %26quot;Take my work of making a carriage wheel. I cut the wood with an axe, neither too fast, nor too slow. What the mind thinks what the hands do. When the wheel is finished, it is sturdy and turns smoothly. This skill can only be learned through long years of practice. I can%26#039;t teach my son the skill by words of the mouth only. Nor can my son learn it without practice. This shows that since the sages were dead, what they left behind in the books are things of the past. What is Your Majesty reading, if not the trash of the ancients?%26quot;
