How long dose it take to train to be really good in martial arts?

I was watching a martial arts film the other day and seeing this guy do some really good moves like back flips and really high flying kicks. I do some martial arts workouts at home but i%26#039;m wanting to be really good at it like that soon. How long will it take and is it ok to train at home or do i need to go to classes as well? Because no one will go with me at the moment and i%26#039;m embarrassed to go on my own being a girl.|||Theres alot of people that will tell you %26quot; you cant use a backflip in a fight!%26quot; or %26quot;why would you do a back hand spring? its useless in a fight.%26quot; but the thing is, everything has a time and place in a fight, so you cant rule it out. I kind of think of martial arts like tools, so the more you know, the more things you have in that tool box. Its like, if you have a backflip in your arsenal of moves, it cant hurt right? so if you want to use back flips when fighting go ahead, but you should be aware of the drawbacks and the benefits of using that in combat.

Now to your first question, yes you do need a qualified instructor. If you dont have one, then you wont know whether your kicking right, or if your kicking wrong. Its always great to have someone to teach you how to do things properly and to judge how you do things.

Dont be embarassed! Its just as embarassing for a guy as it is for a girl! There are women as doctors, lawyers, and as pressidential hopefuls, so you shouldnt feel that you cant do anything by yourself just because your a girl. I think women are just as good as men, hell mabey even better because women have a real strong mind (calm and patient, most girls anyways). If you want to do a martial art, then you shouldnt be stopped by feelings of embarrasment. Why should you be embarrased? because you want to learn martial arts? what do you think the people in the TKD classes are there for? get a little confidence and go and check out what places are best for you to go and do martial arts. after a while, I bet your friends will want to join with you too!

For when you go and pick out a martial art, dont do it cuz everyone thinks its the best, do it because you like it. Dont worry what others say and do it for your pleasure. When choosing, look for an instructor you will be comfortable with and who looks like he is passionate for what he teaches. If the instructor is shoving a contract at you, then leave, because hes there for money, and likely does not care for his students. Also, take a free class and see what the students are learning. If they look like they know what their doing, you feel comfortable there, and the price isnt too high, then join.

for pricing, it varies, but youll pay anything from 40- 100 dollars. anything more than 100 and they better offer lessons 4 times a week and have a damn good instructor. so with this said I hope I convince you to go out and join a martial art and dont forget, the martial art you do should be for yourself, not for others (if you want to take TKD for the flips and all of that, do it, regardless of what others say. I recomend you do ITF or WTF since those styles are recognized world wide).|||0321u9u419u591|||Don%26#039;t pay attention to the movies. Martial arts training is a lifelong pursuit.

I%26#039;m at 20 years and I%26#039;m still waiting to become %26quot;good,%26quot; which may sound frustrating, but is actually pretty cool. The more you study, the more you see that there is to learn ... so your definition of %26quot;good%26quot; always changes.

peace!|||practice makes perfect. its ur all thumbs it will take longer then if you%26#039;re athetic|||You shouldn%26#039;t be embarrassed! The ladies at our school have become some of the best martial artists I have ever had the honor to teach. They have developed their character as well as their fighting skills so much that when I train them I am so happy and proud that it feels like my heart will burst!

DO NOT base what you want from some choreographed scenes from a movie. Almost everything you see in film is absolutely useless for self-defense/martial arts. Find a reputable school and dedicate yourself to training. The rewards for your discipline and determination will be well worth it.

NOTE: I must have been wasting my time with all this training and fighting!! It should have only taken six months to learn to do a backflip beatdown and become my best. Guess I need to find a good trainer...|||hey, it takes commitment, being embarrassed means you are not commited

it only takes a good trainer 6 months to get you at your best,

it is all about the trainer, of course you can do it in your house, but you really need a spotter.

i learned how to do backflips at home, my cousins were my spotters, they hold my hips while i flipped, until i could do it alone.

dont give up and dont be embarrassed, because if they make fun of you you can always kick their butts. oh Yeah!!!|||It takes a lifetime of dedication to become very good.

However: You will need to take some classes, you will need to get over your embarrassment about going by yourself, you will need to leave your pride at the door when you enter the training hall, and you will need to train hard.

If you can%26#039;t do those then martial arts really isn%26#039;t for you/|||Do not be emberassed, women are some of the best martial artists. Anything else I could say RJ already said it.

edit: lol @ messenge.. How are you going to kick there butts. Back flip on them? Just curious.|||try gymnastics and martial art for that kind of stuff|||It takes a long time and much dedication. It becomes part of who you are.

We have many %26quot;girl%26quot; students at our school. Go even if you go by your self. You may find that many people in the martial arts community are some of the nicest friendliest people you can encounter.

See how many women are involved in this forum?

I%26#039;m fairly certain you won%26#039;t be the only %26quot;girl%26quot; there.

One of the Masters at our school is a woman. Just don%26#039;t call her girl.;o)
