Which martial arts discipline should I choose?

I am 20 and a slightly overweight guy and I want to find a martial arts discipline that will not only help me loose weight and get fit, but I also want one that will teach me how defend myself in a real world situation. Being a 6ft guy and chubby I am not messed with alot. I%26#039;ve got broad shoulders and I%26#039;m told I can come across as intimidating. But I know that if I got into a position where I would need to defend myself or my family, I would get obliterated. I%26#039;m also kind of a softey and I want a discipline that will help toughen me up a bit. Give me the confidence to defend myself. I want a style that kicks, punches, throws, and will just all around take-out my opponent. Anybody know what will work for me?|||I wouldn%26#039;t suggest a certain %26quot;style%26quot; just find one that is being taught correctly that you are willing to apply yourself to.... everyone wants to think the style they have learned is the best (or combination of styles) but for the guy that posted the youtube link... if you look through them, there is one bad TKD guy that was humilated by a good Muay Thai fighter... search a little more and you will find a bad Muay Thai fighter get destroyed by a very good TKD fighter.... Don%26#039;t choose a %26quot;style%26quot; but search for a good school, and apply yourself... after a few years then you may want to learn something else... but find a good %26quot;base%26quot;|||join a MMA club. Most martial arts places are Mcdojos, they overcharge and you learn nothing useful. The most important thing when finding a martial arts place is finding a teacher with good credentials, have they fought professionally? Can they prove that they%26#039;ve trained under a recognized master? etc.|||maybe i am slightly biased, given the information that u have provided, i would suggest either brazilian jiu jitsu or muay thai. either u can use on the street in %26quot;real life situtations%26quot;. muay thai uses punches, kickes, elbows and knees. it is the most deadilest form of martial arts. bjj is purely ground fighting. it teaches various forms of chokes, arm locks, and leg locks. it teaches some throws, but if u want 2 be a knockout specialist by throwing some1 on their head, judo is the way 2 go. it u could combine these 3 martial arts (as in MMA) u should b a force 2 b reconded with.

and wen it comes 2 losing weight, one of my teammates has lost at least 50lbs after doing bjj alone! but that%26#039;s also with constant training.

to prove that muay thai is the best form of stand up, look at this vid

theres countless vids like that on youtube.|||i would recommend boxing i do boxing myself infact i am going to my boxing lesson soon

boxing is cool|||Jeet Kune Do or Brazillian Jiu Jitsu.

Eric means Krav Manga.|||mudukwan taekwondo is perfect for you i was about the same build you are and now i am relly fit i am 19 and i am more energetic than when i was six|||tae kwon do....i think i spelt that right, its the art of defense. but as for being able to use force, try the one that the israeli military uses. i cant remember the name, something like kaz magra.|||Dude, Judo!|||If you take Jeet Kun Do, its more going to be a discovery of yourself and what works for you rather then learning punches, kicks, and throws.

Dont learn MMA from an MMA school, I find that learning multiple pure martial arts that you like is better then learning someone else%26#039;s blend. Wing Chun, Greco Roman Wrestling, and Tang Soo Do is my personal Jeet Kun Do (or martial arts blend), its no BJJ/MuayThai but I can still do good with it becuase its what works best with me.

If your looking for self defense of you and others, Krav Maga (make sure its not a phony school)/Judo/Wing Chun would be my recommendation. No Tae Kwon Do unless you plan on slimming down because overweight people should not be kicking. If you we%26#039;re slimmer then TKD could substitute Wing Chun.
