Which is more important for martial arts, having strong the abs or strong the lower back muscles?

How does each help in martial arts?

What is your routine for training the abs and lower back FOR MARTIAL ARTS?

Which one do you train more, abs or lower back?|||it depends a lot of what your doing

but its true, strong back = store core

and strong core = strong back

for more striking based arts tho

work you core muscle, they help transfer the energy

having a strong core and strong arms is enough to knock someone out (Kimbo Slice vs. Seth Petruzelli, Seth was on one foot and swung from his hips and dropped Kimbum *note i hate kimbo and this is a very recent on youtube fight you can look up*)

however should you focus on a grappling based art, work your back a little more

i do MMA and i honestly focus in on my back muscles more, because of wrestling people to the ground, and lifting them up, thats not saying i don%26#039;t work my core

i know a couple guys who train with me who focus more on there core muscles, some of them hit harder then i do, but when it comes to grappling they cant push and pull like i do, and they struggle to lift me off my feet to slam me to the ground

so it does depend a little on the martial art your doing

but ideally working one helps the other|||Typically core training will develop both sets of muscles. They work in tandem; the abs work to pull the spine forward while your back muscles arch it. Having strong abs helps promote back health as much as having strong back muscles does. For non-athletes I might say that the back muscles are more important because they%26#039;re used a little more in every day activities, but not to the point where they need to be specially trained. For martial arts, if either is more important I%26#039;d lean towards the abs only because it%26#039;s an area that tends to get targeted for striking. ||| In the arts it is important to have a balance in your mussels from back, sides and front.

If you over train one group and not the others you can put your spine out of alignment.

I have a strong back and weak abs because of a berth defect. If I don%26#039;t train my abs to the level of my back I put my back out when I do any thing that requires me to twist.|||Neither.

The martial arts technique is designed to work without using strength.

This is were correct body mechanics comes in. If you learn the art correctly, you would be effective.

This whole muscular strength stuff comes from lack of knowledge, or knowledge that was left out when more westerners became interested and began learning.

A small handful who showed certain qualities were taught but the general population were cheated.

This is a sad truth. |||I like Shihan J%26#039;s answer but it depends on what kind of martial art you are talking about.

If you are talking about Chin Na or some other martial art that focuses on joint locks and grasps, there is much less need for hip and torso power.|||the ab%26#039;s, lower back and legs all work in together.

if you have strong ab%26#039;s you will have a strong lower back.

if you have weak ab%26#039;s you will have a weak back|||Shihan J is says it the best.

by doing ab work you strengthen your lower back,

by doing lower back exercises your strengthening your abs.|||Strong abs. All of your power comes from your center (abs). Plus, strong abs make for a strong lower back.||| HAVING A STRONG BACK IS MORE IMPORTANT
